Find the best Torquay walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the Paignton area.

The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Mountain Warehouse Paignton

30 Victoria Street, Paignton TQ4 5DN, UK – 01803 664407

Great value. Shane it is only a small shop.

Good quality items from rain coats camping and hiking gear footwear

Camouflage

264 Torquay Rd, Paignton TQ3 2EZ, UK – 01803 552899

I’ve always visited Camoflague over and over because of Steve (Owner) or Nick, they’re able to get even some niche items they don’t sell in store. They have a changing room if you need to try stuff on and are really helpful in regards to knowledge about products etc. Reasonable prices, in some cases lower, in others marked up, but that’s the case with all small shops but I’m more than happy with that to support them. 5/5 - Keep on doing what you do

Top shop. Let down by another company and Camo store took my order, dispatched it same day despite being mid afternoon and I received my new Altberg Peacekeepers the very next morning. Very professional bunch and definitely will use them again

Mountain Warehouse

69 Union Street, Torquay TQ1 3DA, UK – 01803 215105

Camping and Caravaning

Broadleigh Farm

Broadleigh Farm Caravan Park, Stoke Gabriel, Totnes TQ9 6PU, UK – 01803 782110

We've been returning to this site for a number of years now and have never had a bad experience there. The pitches are large and well spaced out and the facilities are always spotless. The grounds are maintained exceptionally and the flowers and hanging baskets are beautiful. The views over the hillside are also stunning. The prices are very reasonable too. Plus on top of that the farm produces the most amazing cider and they have recently started giving tours which I would highly recommend.

We had a nice flat pitch. Beautiful Clean toilets and free shower.... the only thing that was a pain was they parked the cider van in the gateway for a couple of days and we struggled getting our camper van in the gate... glad we didn't have a caravan. We wouldn't if got in. and some pitchs are quite hilly. They could do with some more electric box's as they are quite far apart and would need a very long lead to reach from some pitchs. Although it's not a bad site it's also not a great site. I don't think I would come again but it depends on what you want.

Widend Touring Park

Totnes Rd, Marldon, Paignton TQ3 1RT, UK – 01803 550116

Facilities were clean. To be fair the season was not starting until the following week. Bar looked good but was closed when we wanted to go in. Will have longer hours later. Our only complaint was our emplacement was covered in dog pooh which we did point out to the warden. So being so hot it smealt even tho we cleaned it up. Swimming pool looked clean too but we didnt use it

We loved this place it has everything you need for a family holiday. Pool, bar, shop, food take a way, we tried their home reared lamb which was excellent. Highly recommend widend its in a perfect spot for getting all around tobay and sightseeing. Staff are friendly and helpful we will definatly return.

Lakeview Caravans

Grange Rd, Paignton TQ4 7JP, UK – 07956 302055

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
